The Tythe Barn Bar
The old Tythe barn has been tastefully restored to its former glory
and now houses the inn’s public bar.
Five hundred year old beams infilled with lathe and plaster look down
on lime-washed rough stone walls and a pine floor strewn with odd tables
and chairs.
Behind the bar, a range of keg beers and lagers support real cask
conditioned ale which is served direct from the barrel in full view
of the recipient
Painted behind the bar is a recently commissioned mural by local
artists Fleur Kelly and Diana Byrne.
The mural depicts the "magic" of the Mells area with its wealth of
history in the arts, literature and commerce.
Beginning with pre-historic Longbarrows, the mural takes us through
Roman hill forts and medieval castles, on to the early industrial revolution
with local iron works, mining and quarrying.
The journey continues past Royalist and Cromwellian battles, through
the origins of internationally known nursery rhymes portraying idyllic times
of romantic tranquility, on to the relatively recent work of the renowned
architect Edward Lutyens and so to the present day.
